Mazza Gallerie
Washington, DC

Architect: Cooper Carry
Size: 3 stories
Schedule: 6 months

This renovation for the upscale Mazza Gallerie retail center in Friendship Heights involved Neiman Marcus and the Metro entrance located inside the mall.  This elegant, Washington shopping landmark originally opened in 1977 as a 300,000 square foot enclosed fashion center anchored by Neiman Marcus.

The renovation added four new display windows along Wisconsin Avenue, upgraded the entrance to Neiman Marcus, and added a three-story display window at the corner of Wisconsin and Western Avenues.  A new canopy was put over the Mazza Gallerie Friendship Heights Metro entrance and upgrades were made to the interior finishes from the Metro rotunda to the mall entrance.

The new display windows more than double the street exposure that Neiman Marcus had before the renovation.  The three-story display at the corner of the building houses a dynamic sculpture titled "metamorphosis" made up of over 3,000 individually crafted glass butterflies that change colors at night.  The new, larger Metro canopy, along with brighter floor and wall tile, open the Western Avenue entrance to the Mazza Gallerie, creating a more inviting space.  The new canopies wrap from the Metro entrance on Western Avenue around the new corner display and down Wisconsin Avenue, welcoming shoppers to Washington, DC and the renovated Mazza Gallerie.

This project also included related site and site utility work.  All work was performed while the retail center and metro remained open.
