This new three story state-of-the art library in Rockville includes public library space and administrative offices, as well as two large public meeting rooms, the Friends of the Library store, a large children’s library and a teen area with a homework center and multimedia features.
The ultra-modern design of the library commemorates a significant local occurrence - the mapping of the human genome. Overall, the building will follow the curvature of Maryland Avenue, while the exterior curtain wall will undulate along the curve – a subtle reference to one half of a double helix. The landscaping along the Maryland Avenue facade completes the other side of the double helix, also in a subtle fashion. Other design features include a three-story main entrance canopy, a two-story elliptical feature stair, curvilinear interior walls, and high-end finishes.
The building exterior consists of brick and cast stone masonry with aluminum storefront, metal panels and built-up roof.
The new library will house the additional 60,000 volumes that will be purchased over the next three years, accommodating the growing needs of the Rockville Community.
