Sterling Community Center

Sterling Community Center was a three-phase LEED Silver project which included the renovation of 120 Enterprise Street, demolition of 150 Enterprise Street, and expansion of the parking lot with utility tie-ins.

The original building at 120 Enterprise Street was an 18,000 SF, 1970s masonry structure. Our team raised the split-level building to one contiguous level. The existing gymnasium was expanded and received a higher roof structure. The renovated building includes a lobby, teen recreation area, gym, fitness room, computer room, kitchen, classrooms, administrative space, and art room. The work involved storefront and glazing, exterior brick and metal panels, membrane roofing, folding partitions, vertical folding overhead door, geothermal wells, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, millwork, low voltage, audiovisual, fencing, and other typical materials of new single-story construction.

Phases 2 and 3 included the mechanical rooftop unit and lighting salvage operations and subsequent demolition of the 150 Enterprise Street building. In addition, the scope of work included the completion of stormwater structures and the construction of the new parking lot and vehicular entrance to the site from Enterprise Street.

Unforeseen excavation was necessary, as our team discovered rock throughout the site in some areas as shallow as 12” below grade, in locations where utility lines, a stormwater management system, and a 16’ deep retaining wall needed to be placed. Forrester employed a rock specialist to examine the bore samples, drawings and exposed rock and determine the best approach. Our team then used a 340 excavator with a 10,000 lb. hammer to break it up and excavated the rest with a 210 excavator. The rock specialist worked with the utility subcontractor to remove the rock to provide the needed elevations for the installation of the utility lines and underground stormwater management system.
