National Naval Medical Center | Multiple Projects

Founded in 1938, the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) is known as the President’s hospital providing care to the first family as well as members of the armed forces. Forrester Construction has performed four projects for this repeat client including renovations of the emergency room, gastrointestinal clinic and clinical and anatomic laboratories and construction of the military’s first comprehensive labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) center.

The renovated National Naval Medical Center emergency room increased treatment capacity with a more open floor plan and a new nurses station, a separate triage area and two birthing rooms. The gastrointestinal clinic was also converted to an open floor plan featuring a central nurses station surrounded by patient bays and procedure rooms. Renovations to the labs involved the installation of an 18-station pneumatic tube system, a Bio-Safety Level 3 (BSL3) lab, a larger blood draw facility, cytology and histological labs, a blood bank and office and support spaces.

For the Mother and Infant Care Center project, Forrester provided design-build services. The 44,000 SF LDRP unit contains labor, delivery and recovery suites, a large NICU and operating suites.
